Invisalign has surged in popularity over the last few decades and ascended to become one of the most sought-after orthodontic solutions around! Many patients opt into this incredible treatment because they’d like a straighter and more symmetrical smile – however, you may be wondering if the aligners are capable of tackling other types of issues, such as overbites and other bite problems. Continue reading below to learn a little more about Invisalign and how it’s capable of doing much more for your pearly whites than you might’ve realized!
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign works by applying gentle, steady pressure to precise spots within your smile. The primary purpose of the treatment is to move teeth along the periodontal ligament, which is the connective tissue responsible for attaching your teeth to your jaw, until they’re in a healthier, straighter position.
They serve the exact same purpose as braces and can tackle more-or-less all of the same issues as their traditional metal counterparts. The aligners themselves are made from a durable clear plastic material that’s custom-shaped to fit comfortably on your teeth, making it a much more subtle and convenient option compared to metal braces.
What Types of Bite Problems Can Invisalign Address?
Just like no two people are ever quite the same, tooth and bite problems tend to be different for each person. That said, some bite problems are easier to address than others; often, individuals with a “healthy bite” and minor crowding or spacing issues can benefit from Invisalign treatment.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s limited to just them, as Invisalign is also capable of addressing mild bite issues including overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. Overbites tend to be one of the most common bite problems among all age groups, but if a patient is young and still growing, a special type of appliance can easily be used to redirect a patient’s growth and fix their bite. In older patients with overbites, the same effect can be achieved with special elastics.
Most bite problems can be fixed with Invisalign, but depending on the type of bite and severity, wearing elastics or some other additional appliances may be needed. In any case, your orthodontist will evaluate your case before providing you with a customized treatment plan.
Note that severe bite issues might not be treatable with Invisalign, and may require metal braces – but do not let this deter you! It’s still a fantastically capable treatment option that can deliver straighter smiles, healthier bites, and soaring self-confidence!
